Yarns have been in a cat family

What does it actually mean when someone says that something, let's say yarn, has been in a cat family? For example, this:

It means that a cat finds yarn in a box. A cat pushes the lid off (preferably in the middle of the night making a lot of noise). A cat purrs happily in the box full of yarn. (You should hear him... He is really happy.)
