Äitienpäivä - Mother's Day

Otimme varaslähdön ja juhlimme äitienpäivää omien äitiemme kanssa jo eilen. Onnea vielä kerran, äiti, ja kaikki muutkin äidit!

We took a false start and celebrated Mother's Day already yesterday with our mothers.

Meiltä Jussin kotikonnuille on 140 km. Ajomatka kestää noin 1 h 40 min ja agenttireitti muodostuu monenlaisista pätkistä moottoritiestä lopun ralliosuuden hiekkatiehen. Jussin sukassa on 72 s kerroksella. Matkan aikana ehtii neuloa noin 42 kerrosta eli 3024 silmukkaa. Se tekee keskimäärin 21,6 silmukkaa per kilometri. Lisäksi kynsilakkani sointuu kauniisti sukan taivaansinisiin raitoihin.

The distance from our place to Jussi's old home is 140 kms. The drive there lasts approximately for 1 hour 40 minutes and consists of all kinds of roads from motorways to sand roads. Jussi's sock has 72 stitches per round. During the drive you can knit 42 rounds, that is, 3024 stitches. That equals to an average of 21,6 stitches per kilometre. In addition to that, my nail polish matches the sky blue stripes perfectly.

Korian ABC:lta mukaan jäivät laarien ainoat valkoiset Bambu Plussat. Pinkkiä ja kellertävää jäi vielä runsaasti.

Kissat tarkistivat uuden maton. Kuinkahan monta päivää... tuntia... minuuttia matto säilyy puhtaana?

An der schönen blauen Donau

(Tämän merkinnän taustamusiikiksi suosittelemme Tonava kaunoista.)

Tonava kaunoinen -huivi on viimein valmis ja yhtäkkiä pää on aivan tyhjä: mitä oikein huivista kertoisin? Sanat leijuvat jossain niinkuin avaruusalus Avaruusseikkailu 2001 -elokuvassa. Otetaan siis speksit:

Malli: omasta pääpästä
Lanka ja langan menekki: Yubinan silkki-kashmirsekoite (100 g = 700 m) kaksinkertaisena, menekki vähäinen
Puikot: 3,5 mm pitsi-Addit
Koko: 60 x 175 cm (suunnilleen)

Plussaa:
- pingotusraudat ovat rock ja pop
- valmis neule pingottuu kauniisti
- lanka on ihanan pehmeää ja kiiltävää ja paranee vain koko ajan

Miinusta:
- älä käytä pingotuksessa t-neuloja, takertuvat lankaan ja tulee sotkua
- kannattaa olla muutenkin varovainen, ettei kisko neuleen lankoja lenkeiksi
- lanka purkautuu helposti, jos silmukka putoaa puikolta ja virheen korjaaminen voi olla hankalaa (ks. kuva löysästä kohdasta alla)

Neuleen tarkoitus:
- Wienin filharmonikkojen uuden vuoden aaton konserttiin

Pitäisikö viimein kertoa koko juttu?
- kyllä / ei (yliviivaa väärä vaihtoehto)

Viime uuden vuoden päivänä katselin televisiosta Wienin filharmonikkojen Strauss-konserttia niinkuin monena vuonna aiemminkin. Koska omistan Intternjetin ja AaTeeKoon ja ne sattuivat olemaan kätevästi käden ulottuvilla, näpyttelin Googlea ja sain oppitunnin diplomi-insinöörien monipuolisesta ja vaihtelevasta itseilmaisukyvystä:

M: Jussi, Wienin filharmonikkojen uuden vuoden konsertin liput arvotaan... tai siis mahdollisuus ostaa liput. Jänskää.
J: Jaa.
M: Niitä konsertteja on kolmena päivänä ja liput maksaa 850 eurosta 20 euroon. Ohjelma on kaikissa sama.
J: Jaa.
M: Jos mä osallistun, nää seisomapaikat on vaan 20 euroa?
J: Jaa.
M: No, mä osallistuin kaikkeen kolmeen, mutta en mä kuitenkaan voita. En mä koskaan voita mitään.
J: Jaa.

Myöhemmin maaliskuussa:

M (saapuu kotiin ja poimii kirjeet lattialta): Vau, hieno kirje... Siis ilmoittaako filharmonikot näin hienosti, että sori, ei bonusta?
J (saapuu samalla kotiin): Jaa.
M (avaa kirjeen ja lukee itsekseen): "Dear Mrs Katajala, please pay..." Jussi, me mennään uutena vuotena Wieniin.
J: Jaa.
M: Jussi, mä voitin liput uuden vuoden aaton konserttiin!!! Mutta enhän mä koskaan voita mitään! Uskomatonta!
J: Jaa.
M: Tarttee iltapuvun, lennot, hotellin, mitä nähtävyyksiä, sacherkakkua, schnitzeliä, Tonava, mä näen Tonavan... Iiiiih! Ja sacherkakkua!
J: Jaa.
M: Wienissä on myös Hundertwassertalo, mä teen sulle Hundertwasser-sukat ja otan kuvan susta ne sukat jalassa sen talon edessä.
J: Jaa.

Vielä myöhemmin:

M (surffaa): Mennäänkö tällöin? Käykö tää lento? Hinta on tää? Entä tää hotelli? Mä varaan.
J: Jaa.

Seuraavalla viikolla voitin lotossa 14 euroa, joten taisin käyttää loppuelämäni tuurin kerralla kahdessa viikossa. Ei se mitään, sillä liput on jo maksettu, hotelli varattu ja lennot tilattu. Iltapuvustakin puuttuu enää vain kengät, laukku ja... öh... se iltapuku. Eikun menoksi!

The Blue Danube stole is ready and suddenly my head is completely empty. What should I say about the stole? the words float somewhere like the space ship in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. Let's go with the specs then:

Pattern: my own
Yarn and yardage: Yubina cashmere and silk blend (100 g = 700 m) held double, yardage small
Needles: 3,5 mm Addi Lace
Size: 60 x 175 cm (approximately)

Pluses:
- blocking irons really work
- the lace really opens up beautifully when blocked
- the yarn is soft and shiny and gets better all the time

Minuses:
- using t-pins in blocking makes a mess
- it's easy to pull out strands from the stole
- the yarn unravels easily if you drop a stitch (results in the photo above)

Purpose:
- Vienna Philharmonics New Year's Eve concert

Should I tell the whole story now?
- yes / no (cross false option out)

I watched the Vienna Philharmonics New Year's Concert, as usual, and as I happened to have my laptop conveniently close, I typed a few words to Google and got a lesson in the versatile and comprehensive communications skills engineers have:

M: Jussi, the Vienna Philharmonics concert tickets are given by lottery... or, you could win a chance to buy the tickets. Interesting.
J: Hmmph.
M: There're actually concerts three days in a row and the tickets cost from 850 euros to 20 euros. The program's the same in all of them.
J: Hmmph.
M: What if I take part in the lottery, the standing seats are only 20 euros?
J: Hmmph.
M: Well, I took part in all the three lotteries, but I won't win anyway. I never win a thing.
J: Hmmph.

Later in March

M (arrives home, pcks up mail from the floor): Wow, what a fancy letter. Do the Philharmonics really say "sorry, no bonus" in such a classy way?
J (also arrives home): Hmmph.
M (opens the letter and starts to read): "Dear Mrs Katajala, please pay..." Jussi, we're going to Vienna for New Year.
J: Hmmph.
M: Jussi, I won the tickets to the New Year's Eve concert! But I never win! Amazing!
J: Hmmph.
M: I need an evening gown, and we need to book the flights and the hotel and check the sights and the sacher cake and the wiener schnitzel and the Danube... I'll see the Danube... Eeek! And sacher cake!!
J: Hmmph.
M: The Hundertwasser House is in Vienna. I'll need to knit you the Hunderwasser socks and then I'll take a picture of you in front of the house wearing those socks!
J: Hmmph.

Even later:

M (surfs the net): Should we go on this date? On this flight? The price is this-and-this. Is this hotel OK?
J: Hmmph.

The next week I won 14 euros in the national lottery, so I must have used all the remaining luck in my life now. Well, nevermind, the tickets have been paid and the hotel and the flights have been booked. My outfit is missing only the shoes, the purse and... err... the outfit a.k.a the evening gown itself. Let's go!

Seinällä - On the wall

Kaj Stenvall on ollut lempitaiteilijoitani jo pitkään, siksi seinällämme on nytkin ankkataulu. Miksiköhän joku otti siitä noin uskomattoman huonon ja vinksin vonksin olevan kuvan?

Kaj Stenvall has been one of my favourite artists for a long time, that's why we have a poster version of one of his duck paintings on our wall at the very moment. I just wonder why someone took such a badly composed picture of it?

Elämää reunalla - Livin' on the Edge

Tonava-joki on eri lähteiden mukaan noin 2800-2900 km pitkä. Niin on tämän huivin reunuskin. Uuteen vuoteen on enää reilut seitsemän kuukautta aikaa.

According to different sources, the river Danube is approximately 2800-2900 kilometres long. So is the edging of the scarf. There's only a little over seven months left until New Year.

Huivin reuna, toinen otto - Scarf edging, take two

Etukäteissuunnittelu kannattaa, huivin reunus alkoi tällä kertaa paljon mukavammin. Tosin säkääkin oli: huivin kerrosmäärä oli reunuksen mallineuleen kannalta sopiva, vaikka en laskenutkaan kerroksia. Pientä säädön tarvetta on kuitenkin havaittavissa, koska ihan kaikkia liikkuvia osia ja yhtälön tekijöitä en sittenkään huomannut ottaa huomioon, mutta ehkä tällä kertaa ad hoc -neulonta tuottaa kelvollisen lopputuloksen.

Planning ahead helps, this time the edging of the scarf started much more smoothly. I did have luck, though, the amount of rows happened to match the amount of stitches needed for the edging without any counting. Now it looks like the edging needs some fiddling because I managed to neglect some pieces of the puzzle after all, but maybe this time ad hoc knitting will suffice.

Vappuna voi myös neuloa huivin reunuksen alkua ja purkaa huivin reunuksen alun. Alkoholilla ei ole osuutta asiaan, vaan huonolla (lue: olemattomalla) suunnittelulla: ad hoc -neulonnan pilkka osui omaan nilkkaan. (Ja juu, on se jupina-kashmiria, tai oikeastaan jupina-kashmir-silkkiä.)

On 1st of May you can also knit the start of an edging of a scarf and rip the start of the edging of a scarf. The process was not alcohol-related but due to bad (read: non-existent) planning: the revenge of ad hoc knitting.

Lampaat laitumelle - Sheep ahoy

Wikipedian mukaan vappuna päästetään lampaat laitumelle, oli sää mikä hyvänsä. Tänä vuonna sää suosii, joten oikein hauskaa vappua kaikille!

Lampaat eivät ole pakollinen vappuvaruste (huomatkaa varsin kömpelö aasinsilta), mutta jos sellaiselle on tarvetta, Flying Pigin ohjeiden mukaan voi askarrella varsin myötämielisen yksilön.

- Juodaanko simaa?
- Juujuu.
- Ilmapalloja? Serpentiiniä?

- Munkkeja? Tippaleipää?

Ysk ysk, niisk niisk - cough cough, sneeze sneeze

Juuri, kun luulin toipuneeni flunssasta, se iski varoittamatta uudelleen takavasemmalta ja entistä pahempana. Tällä kertaa en kärsi kuumeesta, mutta yskä on kamala. Köh köh, niisk niisk ja ysk ysk vain.

Just when I thought I had recovered from the flu, it stroke again without a warning and was/is even worse than earlier. This time I do not have any fever but the cough is bad. Cough cough and sneeze sneeze to you, too!

Tämä luikero taas on noin 1,2 metriä Tonava kaunoinen -huivia. Huivi etenee hitaasti, mutta varmasti. Suurin työ on vielä edessä, sillä aion neuloa huiviin reunuksen ja sen tahkoamiseen menee taatusti pieni iäisyys, jos toinenkin. Aikaa on onneksi vielä monta kuukautta, Wienin filharmonikot kutsuvat vasta vuodenvaihteessa.

This slinky is approximately 1,2 meters of The Blue Danube scarf. It's progressing slowly but surely. The biggest part is still ahead because I plan to knit an edging for the scarf and it'll take forever, maybe even two times forever. Luckily I still have many months left to finish the scarf, the Vienna Philharmonics do not await us until the end of the year.

...ja pakenimme hurjistuneen pandalauman takaa-ajamina - ...and we ran away, chased by a group of furious pandas

Anoppi täytti 71 vuotta viime lauantaina, joten valjastimme uljaan ratsumme ja karautimme heti aamunkoitteessa kohti Kymenlaakson suistoa. Koska yksikään kunniallinen nainen ei matkusta ilman äitiään niinkin pahamaineiseen paikkaan kuin Elimäki, haimme äitini mukaan. Lukijoiden mielenterveyden säilyttämiseksi sensuroimme seuraavat osuudet hurjasta vaelluksesta ja siirrymme suoraan paluumatkaan, jolla pysähdyimme tankkaamaan ratsun... kyllä, lausutaan se kuorossa: Kooo-riii-aaan Aaa-Beee-Ceelläää.

My MIL turned 71 on Saturday, so we saddled our horses and rode to Kymenlaakso early in the morning. On the way there we picked up my mom. For your sanity's sake I now skip straight to the journey back when we stopped at the... yes, you know, the Koria ABC service station with the Novita factory shop.

Suuntasimme äidin kanssa lankalaareille. En odottanut ihmeitä, joten yllätys oli mieluisa: Bambu plussaa. (Olin lähes varma, että muiden tekemien helmikuisten ensibongausten jälkeen lankaa ei olisi enää saatavilla.) Värejä oli kahta: ruispuuronpunaista ja vauvankak... sinapinkeltaista. Lastasin mukaan pussillisen kumpaakin väriä, äiti taas sortui siniseen seiskaveikkaan. Sitten pakenimme hurjistuneen pandalauman takaa-ajamina.

My mom and I headed to the yarn bins. I did not wait for much so the surprise was a pleasant one: Bambu plus in bags in two colours: berry(ish) red and mustard(ish) yellow. I loaded our wagon with two bags, one of each colour, and my mom got a bag of basic blue wool yarn. Then we ran away, chased by a group of furious pandas.

Kissojakin kiinnosti.
The cats couldn't care less.

PS. Bambu plus on koe-erä paksua bambusekoitelankaa, joka ei tullut tuotantoon. Speksit: 75 % bambua, 25 % puuvillaa, 4-4,5 mm puikot, tiheys 20 s ja 27 krs.

PS. Bambu plus is a test patch of thicker bamboo blend yarn that never went into production. The specs: 75 % bamboo, 25 % cotton, 4-4,5 mm needles, tension 20 st and 27 rows.
