Suomi on neulemaa....

...ainakin Pauline Chattertonin Scandinavian Knitting Designs -kirjan (1977) mukaan. Sen mukaan perinteiset skandinaaviset neulemallit ovat suomalaisia ja norjalaisia, ruotsalaiset sen sijaan keskittyivät kirjontaan. Tanskalaisia taas saa kiittää Saksasta ja Hollannista tulleiden vaikutteiden välittämisestä - ja Islanti taas oli suhteellisen eristyksissä (tai ainakin pidemmän matkan päässä), joten siellä neulominen kehittyi eri suuntaan kuin mantereella.

Olipa hienoa lukea amerikkalaista kirjaa, jossa Suomi a) lasketaan kuuluvaksi Skandinaviaan (hyvä on, oikeasti Fennoskandiaan) ja b) mainitaan heti kolmannessa kappaleessa heti knitting -sanan etymologian ja koptilaisten ja syyrialaisten neulelöytöjen jälkeen!

Näin kansallistunteen huumassa voisin vielä mainita, että kirjassa todellakin on paljon perinteisiä kirjoneulemalleja ja ohjeita, kuinka kirjoneuletta neulotaan sekä kuinka malleista saa parhaiten suunniteltua oman paidan. Kirjan muutama paitaohje on tehty suunnilleen saman kaavan mukaan, mutta niistä näkee, kuinka kuviot toimivat käytännössä. Lisäksi kirjassa on muutama huivi-, tyyny- ja peitto-ohje.

Jos perinteiset kirjoneulemallit mustavalkokuvina kiinnostavat, tätä kirjaa kannattaa vilkaista, jos muita vastaavia ei hyllyssä vielä ole. Pääpaino on mallikuvioilla, mutta historiaosuuskin oli ytimekäs ja kiinnostava.

Finland, the land of knitting...

...at least you could say so after reading Pauline Chatterton's book Scandinavian Knitting Designs (published in 1977). According to the book, the traditional Scandinavian knitting patterns have originated from Finland and Norway meanwhile in Sweden the focus was on needlecrafts. You can thank the Danes for mediating influences from Germany and Holland - and Iceland was rather distant so knitting there evolved into different directions from knitting on the continent.

It was great to read an American book that a) acknowledges Finland as a part of Scandinavia (the correct area would be Fennoscandia, wouldn't it?) and b) is mentioned in the third paragraph after the etymology of the word knitting and the Coptic and Syrian knitting-related findings.

While I'm still bursting with national spirit I could mention that the book does include a lot of traditional knitting designs/motifs and instructions on how to knit two-coloured knitting, and how the patterns in the book can best be used in designing your own sweater. The few sweater patterns in the book are pretty much the same but they show how the patterns work in practice. In addition to those, the book has few pillow, afgan, and scarf patterns.

If you like to see traditional knitting designs in black-and-white pictures, this book is worth a look, if you do not have many similar books already. The focus is on the patterns, but the history section is indeed terse and interesting.

Nolo tunnustus ja Roguen hiha

Ensin on kerrottava, että perjantaina jouduin nolon tapahtuman uhriksi. Muita osapuolia olivat kissa, sanomalehti ja keittiön tuoli... Ei siitä sitten sen enempää muuta kuin että oikean käden keskisormi on kipeä ja turvoksissa, vasenta kättä jomottaa jäykkäkouristuspiikin jäljiltä näin vielä sunnuntai-iltanakin ja napsin penisilliiniä viikon verran.

Onneksi perjantainen kämmäily ei haittaa neulomista! Roguen ensimmäinen hiha on valmis, vaikka pidinkin sormenparantelulomaa ja muutenkin viikonloppu on mennyt mm. Ullan pikkujouluja juhliessa ja Ruokamessuilla .

Ensimmäisessä kuvassa Maxi todistaa, ettei koskaan änkeä mihinkään häiritsemään. Toisessa kuvassa yksityiskohta hihansuusta.

An embarrassing confession and Rogue's sleeve

First I have to admit that on Friday I got involved in an embarrassing incident with a cat, a newspaper and a kitchen chair. The incident resulted in me having a sore and swollen middle finger in my right hand, my left hand aches still after the tetanus shot and I have to eat penicillin for a week.

Luckily the incident does not prevent me from knitting, so I finished Rogue's first sleeve. I did have a finger-curing day, though, and this weekend we also had Ulla's Christmas party and Jussi and I visited the Helsinki Food Fair .

In the first picture Maxi demonstrates that he never intrudes and interferes with anything. In the second picture a detail of Rogue's sleeve.

Kissamaista kohteliaisuutta - catlike care

Kun tulin tänään kotiin, minua odotti laukku täynnä lankaa.

When I came home today, a bag full of yarn waited for me.

Kyllä, ilmeisesti Mini oli raahannut sen makuuhuoneesta olohuoneen läpi eteiseen. (!!!) Ymmärrän kyllä huivin raahaamisen (näettekö laukussa olevan Hippy-huivin?) tuosta samasta laukusta ja makuuhuoneesta eteiseen (sitä on tapahtunut), sukkien raahaamisen, keskeneräisten neuleiden raahaamisen, jopa sen, että Rogue kiskotaan toisesta laukusta ja raahataan olohuoneen läpi eteiseen, mutta tuonkokoisen laukun raahaaminen? (Allaoleva kuva on lavastettu mittakaavan havainnollistamiseksi.)

Toivottavasti kukaan kissoista ei tehnyt klassista "tunge pää sangan läpi ja juokse paniikissa" -temppua...

Yes, apparently Mini had dragged the bag from the bedroom, through the living room and to the hall. (!!!) I can understand dragging the scarf from the very same bag (see the Hippy scarf there?) and from the bedroom to the hall, dragging socks, dragging WIPS, even dragging Rogue out of another bag and through the livingroom to the hall, but dragging a bag of that size? (The picture below is set up afterwards to demonstrate the scale.)

Hopefully none of the cats pulled the classic "put your head through the handle and run like h*ll" stunt...

Luulisin, että tuo tarkoittaa, että minun on nyt neulottava ja unohdettava vaatteiden silitys. Roguen hiha etenee hyvää vauhtia.

I think it means that I should knit and forget about ironing clothes. Rogue's first sleeve is coming on nicely.

Rogue etenee

Ensimmäisen kuvan kuvatekstin saatte valita kahdesta vaihtoehdosta. Jos haluatte, voitte samalla arvailla, kumman vaihtoehdon keksi Jussi ja kumman minä:

R2 osa 2

Tänään se kaipaamani R2-lehti saapui. Jos et vielä tiedä, niin kyseessä on Rowanin "neulonta on hip ja hop ja pop ja groovy" -tyylisuuntaa edustavan lehden toinen numero, jota varten on kehitetty omat langat (jotka ovat eri lankoja kuin ykkösnumeron langat).

Hip ja hop ja pop sikseen, lehdessä oli muutamia hyviä ideoitakin. Erityisesti ihailin huovutettuja pitsineuleita, joista oli leikattu osia pois. Groovy, baby, yeah! Ne alkoivat houkutella, sillä sen verran ne erosivat muista huovutetuista neuleista.

R2 part 2

Today I got the R2 magazine I longed for this weekend. If you don't know it yet, it's the second issue of Rowan's magazine that represents the "knitting is hip and hop and pop and groovy" genre. The yarns are new and of course completely different from the ones featured in the first issue.

Nevermind hip and hop and pop, the magazine had some good ideas. I liked especially the felted knitted lace with parts cut off. Groovy, baby, yeah! Those were really tempting because they were so different from the felted knits I've seen so far.

Talven ihmemaa - winter wonderland

Keskeytän normaalin bloggaamisen tärkeää ilmoitusasiaa varten:

Tulikohan tuo nyt varmasti tarpeeksi näkyvästi?

Pikku katkon jälkeen palaamme normaaliin ohjelmaan: perjantaina meidän pikku lurjuksemmme Mini ja Maxi saivat ison laatikon ja olivat hyvin tyytyväisiä. (Kuten huomaatte, Frank oli armollinen ja päästi Maxin pois parvekkeelta.)

After the small break we resume to the normally scheduled program: on Friday our little scoundrels Mini and Maxi got a big box and became very happy. (As you can see, Frank was kind and let Maxi come in from the balcony.)

Minä taas sain laatikon sisällön ja olin hyvin tyytyväinen. Rowanilla oli - ja on nytkin - webbisivuillaan tarjous, johon sorruin! Laatikossa oli neljä Rowanin lehteä (nrot 25, 28, 30 ja 31), neljä Jaegerin lehteä (nrot 5, 7, 8 ja 9) ja neljä Jaegerin esitettä (JB10 - Chamonix, JB13 - Mohair Art, JB14 - Natural Fleece ja JB15 - Trinity).

Mutta missähän R2-lehteni viipyy? Muut samalla kerralla tilaamani kirjaset tulivat jo aikaa sitten.

I got the contents of the box and became very happy. Rowan had - and has now - an offer on their web site and I fell for it! I got four Rowan magazines (25, 28, 30, and 31), four Jaeger magazines (5, 7, 8, and 9) and four Jaeger brochures (JB10 - Chamonix, JB13 - Mohair Art, JB14 - Natural Fleece, and JB15 - Trinity).

Still I wonder where my R2 magazine is? I've already got all the other brochures I ordered that time .

Lauantaina käänsimme hetkeksi selkämme... eikun kävimme katsomassa Grease-musikaalin Hartwall Areenalla ja saimme sillä välin tolkuttomasti lunta. Tässä samat erikat ja suunnilleen sama maisema kuin edellisessäkin merkinnässä tänä aamuna kuvattuna. (Terveisiä vain Annelle Belgiaan!)

On Saturday we got snow - just when you turn your back... I mean go see the Grease musical, you get a lot of snow. Here are the same heathers and about the same view as in the previous entry. The pictures were taken this morning. ( Anne in Belgium, for those about to be snowed in we salute you!)

Tänään kävimme ostamassa kissanruokaa ja katsokaa, mitä joulukoristeosastolta löytyi! Neulova lammas !

Lammas on näköjään neulonut kaulaliinaansa niin paljon, että puikkojen päät ovat kuluneet aivan tylpiksi. (Myös sen harmailla ja valkoisilla kavereilla oli sama ongelma.)

Today we went shopping for cat food and look what I found among the Christmas ornaments! A knitting lamb !

The lamb appears to have knitted its scarf for such a long time that the end of the needles have worn out and become blunt. (Also its buddies, both white and gray, seemed to have the same problem.)

Entäs Mini? Mini ei tarkene edes katsoa parvekkeen ovelle päinkään, kun lämpötila laskee alle +10 asteen. Mini nukkui tyytyväisenä kissanpedissä koko ajan, kun veljmies päätti värjötellä parvekkeella.

What about Mini then? Mini thinks it's way too cold to even look at the balcony door after the temperature drops below + 10 degrees centigrade. He slept in the kitty bed all morning through while his brother decided to be brave.

Designer's Choice Book Three, The Embraceable You Collection includes mostly patterns for Elsebeth Lavold's Angora yarn. There are a lot of bobbles! My favourite is Worf . Try and guess why...

Designer's Choice Book Four, The Sophisticated Lady Collection includes patterns mostly for the Silky Tweed yarn. The patterns are indeed classic and what pleases me the most (even though I'm only 31 years old) is that the models are not young, thin and pretty, but women whose wrinkles may show.

Shoppailua - Going shopping

Kävin eilen Niinan kanssa valloittamassa kaupungin... Suuntasimme shoppailukierroksellamme ensimmäisenä Anttilaan hakemaan tarjous-Hippyä, jotta saisin huivini valmiiksi ja sen jälkeen lähdimme Menitaan ja Sypressiin.

Niina and I went shopping on Saturday. First I got two balls of Hippy that were on sale at the local supermarket Anttila so I could finish my scarf, and then we headed to two LYSs, Menita and Sypressi.

Kaikenkattavaa matkakertomusta ette saa, vaan seuraa epämääräistä mutinaa ja salaperäisiä asioita... Menitasta ostin pitkähapsuista Funny-hapsulankaa. Jos projekti onnistuu, näette sen seuraavassa Ullassa. Seurasin myös Niinan esimerkkiä ja ostin puikkojen päihin laitettavia nalleja. Jussi kysyi, onko minulla karkkia, kun yritin estää nalleja hyökkäämästä sohvalla loikovan Maxin kimppuun...

Then follows secrecy and hints of what's to come instead of a details: from Menita I got a ball of Funny with the longer eyelashes. If my project from Funny is a success, you can see it in the next Ulla. I also followed Niina's example and bought some plastic bears that are used to keep the stitches from falling off the needles. Jussi asked if I had candy when I tried to stop the bears from attacking Maxi who slept on the sofa.

Ennen Menitassa käyntiä löysin Johanneksen antikvariaatista Mildred Graves Ryanin The Complete Encyclopaedia of Stitchcraft -kirjan, jonka ostin siltä varalta, että mieleni alkaisi yhtäkkiä tehdä ryijyjä, makrameeamppeleita tai - ääk! - ristipistoja! Oli kirjassa neulontaakin ja virkkausta, joten ei syytä huoleen, frivolité-pitsi tai kirjonta eivät saa minua viekoiteltua puoleensa.

On the way to Menita we dropped by at a used books store Johanneksen antikvariaatti, where I found the The Complete Encyclopaedia of Stitchcraft by Mildred Graves Ryan and bought it just in case I would feel like rug hooking, macrame, or - gasp! - cross stitching. The book includes also crocheting and knitting, so don't you worry, I won't be tempted by tatting or needlepoint.

Aina yhtä ihana Kiseleffin basaari vietti lauantaina 20-vuotissyntymäpäiviään, joten sen kunniaksi liikkeissä oli alennuksia, tarjolla oli ilmaista kakkua ja kahvia sekä - voi ei! - esim. Sypressissä langoista sai 20% alennuksen!

Sypressistä ostin lahjan salaiselle pohjoismaiselle neulontakaverilleni (viimeinen kierros on alkamassa ensi viikolla), joten siitä ei sen enempää. Löysin myös Sypressin tarjouskorista Almedahls Silk-lankaa ja ostin viimeiset 12 kerää.

Lanka on 39% silkkiä, 61% puuvillaa ja sitä löytyi koreista kahdeksan kerää vaaleampaa ja neljä kerää tummempaa sävyä. Tästä tulee vielä jonain kesänä kesäpaita...

From Sypressi I got the gift for my secret Nordic knitting pal, so that pretty much covers it for now. (The fourth and last round begins next week.) I also found some Almedahls Silk yarn on sale and bought the last remaining balls. The yarn is 39% silk and 61% cotton, and there were 8 balls of the lighter and 4 balls of the darker yarn available. This will be added to the list of my summer knitting.

Sypressi is located in Kiseleffin basaari. I just love that place! There are many, many shops that sell handicrafts, so if you ever come to Helsinki you should go there. They celebrated their 20th anniversary on Saturday so the shops had discounts, for example Sypressi had 20% off all yarns, and free coffee and cake was served.

Kaksi mustaa käsinettä

Sitten Minin uusien leegojen kuulumisia - tai siis vanhojen hampaiden, joita ei enää ole. Kävimme eilen eläinlääkärillä hammaskiven poistossa ja samalla poistettiin kaksi hammasta alaleuasta. Toisessa oli enää vain vähän juurta jäljellä ja toisessa ei oikeastaan ollenkaan. Syynä siihen saattaa hyvinkin olla Minin Cornish Rex -perimä, sillä ELL kertoi, että nuortenkin rotukissojen hampaille saattaa useinkin käydä noin.

Mielenkiintoista! Yritin etsiä lisää tietoa netistä, mutta en vielä keksinyt oikeita hakusanoja. (Maxin ja Frankin hampaat näyttävät voivan hyvin, mutta kissoja pännii suuhun kurkkiminen.)

We took Mini to the vet to have his tartar removed. Two teeth were pulled out at the same time, one had only a little of the root left and the other had practically none. The reason for that re most likely Mini's Cornish rex genes (his mother was a Cornish Rex). The vet explained that even young pedigree cats are likely to have dental problems.

That's interesting! I tried to look for more information from the Net but I did not find the right search terms yet. (Maxi and Frank seem to have healthy teeth, and the cats are pretty irritated because they did not like me taking a look at their mouths.)

Kasarimuoti iskee taas

Oi, 80-luku! Muistatteko, minä vuonna listoja hallitsivat Beastie Boysien Fight for your Right (to Party) , INXS:n Need You Tonight , Salt'n'Pepan Push It , Belinda Carlislen Heaven Is a Place on Earth ja Bon Jovin Livin' on a Prayer ? ( Woo-oo, livin' on a Prayer, take my hand and we make it, I swear... Sori. Se iskee aina. Kiittäkää onneanne, että en laula La Bambaa, sillä voisin tehdä senkin! Woo-oo, livin' on a prayer! )

Oikea vastaus: 1987. (Lisää hittejä täällä .) Samana vuonna Rowan julkaisi Rowan's Designer Collection: Summer & Winter Knitting -kirjan ja 17 vuotta myöhemmin Marjut osti sen käytettynä. Hiphei, löysiä neuleita, lepakkohihoja, intarsiaa!

Itse asiassa kirjassa oli paljon loistavia yksityiskohtia, joita voisi poimia neuleisiin: hassuja fisuja, pirteitä terrierejä (wuff!), tiikereitä ja klassisia fairisle-kuvioita. Kirja on kahdella tavalla kaksijakoinen: se sisältää eri suunnittelijoiden sekä kesä- että talvineuleita (niinkuin nimikin sanoo) ja sekä klassisia että moderneja neuleita. (Kuvitelkaa itse vuoden 1987 moderni neule.)

Sitten iski nostalgia: Annabel Foxin Sioux-neuleesta tuli mieleen aikanaan ystävälleni Tinolle neulomani paita, johon Pertti (kyllä, juuri hän, joka saa käsineet) suunnitteli inkatyylisen kotkan. Neuleella olisi nyt ikää ainakin kymmenen vuotta eikä siitä valitettavasti ole kuvaa. Se kyllä näytti todella upealta!

It was in 1987. (More hits are listed here .) In the same year Rowan published Rowan's Designer Collection: Summer & Winter Knitting and 17 years later Marjut bought it used. Woo-hoo, loose knits, batwing sleeves, intarsia!

In fact the book has many details I could use: funny fish, perky terriers, tigers, and clasic fairisle patterns. Two times two themes are carried out throughout the book: there are both summer and winter knits (hence the name) and also classical and modern knits by different designers. (Picture a modern sweater from 1987 here.)

Then nostalgia stroke. The Sioux sweater by Annabel Fox reminded me of a sweater I knitted for my friend Tino and for which Pertti designed an inca style eagle (yes, the same Pertti who now gets the gloves). The sweater would be about ten years old now and unfortunately there is no picture. But it did look great!

Teille kissoista ei niin innostuneille tarjolla Maxi... eikun Ullan sarjiksen piirtäjän Pertin ensimmäinen käsine, josta pikkusormen osuus on valmis. Jos nyt kehua saa, niin Pertti on ehdottomasti yksi hauskimmista, ellei hauskin ihminen, joita tunnen ja lahjakas taiteilija. Tapasin Pertin sattumalta kaupassa viikko sitten ja sydäntä särki, kun hän näytti halpakaupasta kaksi päivää sitten ostamiaan hanskoja, jotka olivat jo rikki...

Hippy-huivi ja Rogue ovat jäähyllä, kunnes käsineet valmistuvat.

And to you not so interested in cats I give you Maxi... I mean Pertti 's first glove with the pinky finger ready. He draw the cartoon in Ulla and if I may say a few good words... Pertti's one of the funniest, if not the funniest person I know and a very talented artist. I accidentally met Pertti a week ago and it almost broke my heart when he showed the cheap gloves he had bought two days earlier and that had already unravelled in one place...

Hip hop, Hippy hip hop

Kaikesta huolimatta en sittenkään saanut rakennettua lankakeräpesää viikonlopuksi...

Sen sijaan perjantaina yllättänyt äkillinen Hippy-huivipuuska johti siihen, että neuloin huivia saamani kahden kerän verran. Huivi on nyt arviolta 120-130 cm leveä ja ajattelin neuloa vielä yhden kerän verran, jotta saan ison huivin. Ehkä väsään huiviin myös hapsut. Nyt odottelen, saanko maanantaina toisen ystävälahjan ja lisää Hippyä vai joudunko käymään Anttilassa, missä Hippy on alennuksessa vielä viikon verran (3,90 euroa/kerä).

Despite everything I did not manage to build a nest from balls of yarn for this weekend...

Instead the sudden Hippy scarf burst from last Friday lead to the two balls I got to being knitted. The scarf is about 120-130 cm wide now but I thought I could knit one more ball to make the scarf really wide and maybe I could add a fringe as well. Now I'm waiting whether I get two more balls as a gift on Monday or do I have to go and buy some more. Luckily Hippy's on sale at one of the local supermarkets.

Miksi Hippy on saanut armon suuresta akryylipitoisuudestaan huolimatta? Värien takia (ja koska se oli ilmaista!). Puuterinvärinen Hippy muistuttaa väreiltään juuri sitä Colinetten Point 5 -lankaa, johon ihastuin ensisilmäyksellä, kun surffasin Colinetten sivuille.

Sitäpaitsi Mini on niiiiiiin lutusen näköinen, kun se tamppaa tassuillaan Hippy-kerän pehmeäksi ja käyttää sitä tyynynään... Oiii! Hihkaiskaa, jos haluatte nähdä kuvan... ja toisen... ja kolmannen... ja...

Why do I knit from Hippy despite its high acrylic content? Because of the colour (and because it was a gift!). This particular colourway reminds me of Colinette's Point 5 in the colorway I became fond of the very first moment I saw it on Colinette's web site.

Besides, Mini looks soooooo cute when he kneads a ball of Hippy and uses it as his pillow. Aww! Just say if you want to see a picture... and a second picture... and third... and...

Lisää lankaa! More yarn!

Eilen oli neuletapaaminen Helsingissä ja meitä oli taas mukavasti paikalla ja kaikilla oli mukavaa. Niina on tainnut kertoa jo kaiken, joten tämä tuntuu toistolta: sain Monican avustuksella saksalaisesta Seasonstoresta kimppatilaamamme Lana Grossa Tusshena -langan (itse asiassa Niinan ja minun lankamme ovat saman värisiä eli kirsikanpunaista). Kiitos, Monica (ja rapsutuksia hauveleille)!

Viikonlopun suunnitelmiini kuuluu se, että teen Tusshenastani ja Kashmerinosta pesän ja nukun siellä kaksi päivää. Kuka mitä minäkö väsynyt?

Eilen sain myös vietyä parilapaset Sariannelle ja ne herättivät ansaittua hilpeyttä. Seuraavalla kerralla kuulen, mitä mieltä hänen miehensä oli niistä...

We had the regular knitting meet-up in Helsinki yesterday. I think Niina has already told all about it (hasn't she?) so I think I'm just repeating what she said: I got the Tusshena yarn we had collectively ordered from German Seasonstore with a lot of help from Monica (in fact Niina's and my yarns are the same cherry red colour). Thank you, Monica!

My plans for the weekend include making a nest of Tusshena and Kashmerino and sleeping there for two days. Who me tired?

I also gave the couple's mittens to Sarianne and they seemed to be a fun gift. Next time I'll hear what her husband thought of them...

Tänään taas sain Novitan ystävälahjan: kaksi kerää puuterinväristä Hippyä, puikot ja pussukan. Kivaa! Hieman ihmettelin, minkä ruskean paperipussin olin saanut, siinä ei lukenut mitään päällä. Täytyy myöntää, että en ostaisi Hippyä, koska siinä on aivan liikaa tekokuitua, mutta näin ilmaiseksi sitä on kiva saada, koska lanka kuitenkin näyttää hauskalta.

Tämä Hippy tahtoi olla huivi, vaikkakin Minin mielestä Hippy-kerä oli mainio tyyny. Aloitimme jo testaamisen, me molemmat siis.

Minun pitäisi saada vielä toinenkin ystävälahja, joten missäs se sitten viipyy? Olenhan saanut kaksi henkilöä värvättyä Novita-klubiin . (Toiset kaksi kerää puuterinväristä Hippyä olisivat ihan jees.)

Today I got the gift from the Finnish spinnery Novita, because I had got two persons to join their club . (Everybody who gets someone to join gets a gift.) I got two balls of Hippy, a drawstring bag and needles. I have to admit that I would never buy Hippy because of the high acrylic content (80% acrylic, 20% wool) but it's nice to get it for free.

This Hippy wanted to be a scarf, even though Mini thinks that the Hippy ball made a good pillow. We did start testing alreadym both of us.

But where's my second gift? I did get two persons to join the club. (Another two balls of Hippy in the same colour would be okay.)

Mini voi hyvin (niinkuin kuvistakin näkee) eikä tiedä olevansa ensi viikolla kissojen Andy McCoy uusien leegojen kanssa... Tai siis hammaskiven poisto taitaa kuitenkin riittää. Antibiootteja syöttänyt Jussikaan ei ole pahasti naarmuilla.

Mini's doing fine (as the pictures show) and he does not know that he'll get his tartar removed next week. Jussi who's giving him the antibiotics is not badly scratched either.

Tässä Maxi huolehtii veljestään. Oppisikohan Maxi seuraavaksi harjaamaan Minin hampaat, kun korvien pesu sujuu noin hyvin?

Syksyn kirjasatoa - Books of the autumn

Ennen kirjasatoa pakolliset kissauutiset: Mini-paralla on ientulehdus! Jouduimme viemään kissan eilen päivystävälle eläinlääkärille, kun edes järjettömän kalliit Pit'r'Pat-namit eivät menneet kaupaksi, raksujen syöminen ei onnistunut ja tonnikalankin kanssa oli hankaluuksia.

Päivän aikana se oli alkanut. Aamulla Mini oli vielä ihan normaali (tunki aamuyöstä sängyn jalkopäähän jalkojen väliin/päälle nukkumaan, istui sanomalehden päällä, mätki lehden alla olevaa Maxia tassulla, ahmi aamu-Tassu-namin, tuli mukaan suihkuun...), mutta töistä palattuamme ikenet vaivasivat pahasti. Eilisen ensiavun jälkeen Mini menee ensi viikolla kunnon hammashoitoon, lisäksi kolli on nyt antibioottikuurilla. Meillä nähdään siis "anna kissalle pilleri" -performanssi aamuin illoin!

Pieneläinklinikalla Mini pääsi mukaan juttuun, jossa käsitellään klinikan iltaa. (Juttu ilmestyy Purina-klubin Reviiri-lehdessä joulukuussa.) Kun odottelimme eläinlääkäriä, vilkaisin klinikan takahuoneeseen ja mitä jutun kuvaaja tekikään: neuloi! (Jos luet tätä, niin terveisiä!) Juttelimme siitä hyvin pienen hetken ja vilautin pikaisesti Rogueta kassistani.

Before the books the mandatory cat news: poor Mini has got inflammated gums! We had to take him to the vet yesterday when he refused to eat the very expensive cat treats, did not touch dry food and had trouble with tuna.

It had started during the day. In the morning Mini was okay (slept between/on my feet for few hours, sat on the morning paper, slapped Maxi with his paw when Maxi was under the paper, had his morning treat, came to the bathroom when I showered...), but when we got home from work his gums had started to really bother him. After yesterday's first aid Mini will get proper dental care next week, and he's eating antibiotics at the moment. You can see the "give the cat a pill" performance here twice a day.

At the vet's clinic Mini got into a story that tells about an evening at the clinic. (It's published in Purina-klubi's magazine Reviiri in December.) When we waited for the vet, I saw the photographer sitting in the back room and what did she do: she knitted! We talked for a short while and I showed my Rogue very quickly.

Tässä viimeisin tilaukseni: työangstin keskellä tilattu kokoelma Rowanin lehtisiä. Paras niistä taitaa olla A Season's Tale : 35 upeaa neuletta ja kauniita kuvia Skotlannista. (Rakas joulupukki, toisitko minulle lahjaksi matkan Skotlantiin?) Neuleet vaihtelevat perinteisten kalastajaneuleiden tyylisistä iltaneuleisiin - klassiset palmikko- ja pintaneuleet ovat aina vain suosikkejani.

Muut ovat aina yhteen (tai kahteen) lankaan keskittyviä ohjevihkosia: Plaid Collection , The Summer Tweed Collection , The Cork Collection ja All Seasons Cotton Collection , joissa jokaisessa on 14-16 ohjetta.

Here's the latest arrival: a collection of Rowan books and booklets ordered in the middle of work-related angst. The best of them is A Season's Tale : 35 great designs and beautiful pictures from Scotland. (Dear Santa, would you bring me a trip to Scotland this Christmas?) The designs vary from traditional fishermen's knits style to evening wear - the fishermen knits are my favourites.

The other booklets concentrate on one yarn (or two): Plaid Collection , The Summer Tweed Collection , The Cork Collection and All Seasons Cotton Collection . The booklets have 14-16 patterns each.

Ennen Rowan-pakettia sain Jo Sharpin Knitting Emporiumin , jonka tilasin käytettynä jo jonkin aikaa sitten. En nyt aio intoutua perinteiseen intarsia-vuodatukseen, vaan mainitsen, että kirjassa on kirjo- ja palmikkoneuleiden lisäksi myös hyviä perusneuleiden ohjeita: poolo, peruspaita ja villatakki ainakin.

Tästä minä pidän! Ensiselaamisella löysin ainakin kolme tai neljä neuletta, jotka voisin tehdä. Mukavaa oli se, että samaa neuletta esiteltiin eri värisinä.

Before the Rowan package I got Jo Sharp's Knitting Emporium which I had ordered used quite a while ago. I won't get into my regular intarsia rant, instead I mention that among the cabled and colour knitted sweaters the book has some good basic knitwear patterns: a polo sweater, a regular sweater and a cardigan at least.

Me likey! During the first browsing I found at least three or four designs I could knit. It's also nice that the same sweater was shown in different colours or colour combinations.

Koska en kuitenkaan neulo lapasia kovinkaan usein, ajattelin hyödyntää kuvioita villapaidoissa. Tuo kannen kuvio voisi ainakin mennä johonkin paitaan... Vaikkapa paitaan, jonka teen Tallinnasta ostamistani Tommy-langoista !

Third in row is a find from the last weekend's Book Fair: Kirjokintaita by Mary Olki, published in 1946 (3rd edition). Yes, the book has mitten patterns. Traditional mitten patterns. Lovely mitten patterns.

Since I don't knit mittens that often, I decided to use the patterns in sweaters. The pattern pictured on the cover could be a good choice... For example the Tommy yarn I bought from Tallinn calls me.
