Joskus elämä mättää. Ostin Windows XP:tä käyttävän pikkuläppärin surffilaudaksi matkoja varten. Seuraavana päivänä Microsoft ilmoitti lopettavansa Windows XP:n myynnin - onneksi tuki jatkuu vielä jonkin aikaa. Päätin hankkia GPS-tallentimen, jotta saisin valokuviin kätevästi paikkatiedot. Tänä aamuna lehdessä otsikot huusivat: "GPS-järjestelmä romahtaa!" Aina ei voi onnistua. (Ja jep, turhat hilavitkuttimet ovat hauskoja. Ja turhia. Niin, ja mikä pahinta - miniläppäriä saisi muualta vaaleanpunaisena, mutta ei vaan sieltä, mistä minä sen hankin. Huutava vääryys!)
Sometimes life sucks big time. I bought a netbook with Win XP so I could take it with me when I travel. On the next day Microsoft announced that Win XP is no longer sold -- however, the support does continue for some time. I decided to get a GPS logger for geotagging my photos and this morning the headlines in the newspaper yelled, "The GPS system about to collapse!" Sometimes you just don't succeed. (Yep, unnecessary gadgets are fun. And unnecessary. And what's the worst -- you could get the netbook in pink from elsewhere but not from where I bought it. It is wrong! So wrong!)
Joskus taas asiat toimivat. Seurasin hetken ennakkotilaajien kertomuksia Book Depositoryn kirja-arpajaisista ja päätin tilata Cookie A:n Sock Innovationin suosiolla Play.comista. Se oli hieman kalliimpi kuin Book Depositoryssa, mutta säästyin säätämiseltä ja kirjan turhalta odottelulta.
Kirjan sukat ovat hienoja, sitä ei käy kieltäminen ja odotin myös tekniikkaosioita hyvin kiinnostuneena. Neulon harvemmin mallin mukaan, joten toivoin, että kirjasta olisi myös käytännön hyötyä inspiraation lisäksi. Kirjan tekniikkaosio onkin laaja ja sisältää perusteellisia ohjeita kaavion piirtämisestä mallikuvion koon muuttamiseen ja mallikuvioiden sommitteluun. Varsinaisia sukkaohjeita kirjassa on 15.
Petyin hieman siihen, että kaikki sukat olivat saman kaavan mukaisia ylhäältä aloitettuja - toki kirja rohkaisee kokeilemaan erilaisia ratkaisuja ja esittelee erilaisia varren aloituksia, kärkiä ja kantapäitä, mutta jotenkin olisin kaivannut kirjalta vielä jotain muuta. Myönnän, taisin sortua odottamaan kirjalta liikaa tai jopa mahdottomia, sillä loistava sukkakirja se joka tapauksessa on.
Kirja Ravelryssa
Sometimes thing work. I followed the stories of pre-ordering Sock Innovation by Cookie A from Book Depository and how it had turned into a raffle and decided to order the book from Play.com. It was a bit more expensive there but I did not have to wait if I would get the book or not.
The socks in the book are fine, you cannot deny that, and I also looked forward to the technique section with interest. I hardly ever knit from a pattern so I hoped that the book would offer me more than just inspiration. The technique section is indeed extensive and covers many things from drawing a chart to resizing patterns and arranging the patterns on the sock. There are also 15 sock patterns.
I was a little disappointed when I read that all the socks are knitted from the top down -- the book does enourage you to make modifications and shows different cuffs, heels and toes but somehow I felt like I wanted something more. I have to admit that I must have expected too much or for impossible things because, no matter how you slice it, it is a great sock knitting book.

Minulle esiteltiin Hélenè Magnússonin Icelandic Knitting Using Rose Patterns (Rósaleppaprjón í nýju ljósi) (2008) aikanaan Islannissa. Olin silloin tietenkin liian nuuka enkä raatsinut ostaa kirjaa, mikä jäi harmittamaan. Onneksi työkaverini kertoi olevansa myös matkustamassa Islantiin myöhemmin talvella ja kysyi matkavinkkejä ja sen jälkeen, voisiko tuoda jotain minulle. Pyysin heti tuota kirjaa.
Kirjassa on 26 neulemallia, jotka perustuvat perinteisiin islantilaisiin ruusukuvioihin - kuvioihin, joita alunperin käytettiin kenkien sisälle neulotuissa pohjallisissa! Lisäksi kirjassa kerrotaan kuvioiden ja niiden neulomisen historiasta. Näin museossa alkuperäisiä pohjallisia ja tuntui haaskaukselta käyttää niin kauniita ja taidokkaita neuleita kengän sisällä, kun kukaan ei näe niitä. Siksi onkin hienoa, että kuviot nostetaan nyt näkyville, vaikkakin niiden yhteydessä esitetään karmaiseva sana "intarsia". Ei saa antaa sen häiritä!
Osa kirjan neuleista on riemunkirjavaa kasarityyliä, esimerkiksi Eight-petal rose sweater, jossa kuviota on suurennettu isoksi ja graafiseksi. Suurin osa neuleista on kuitenkin hyvin kauniita, esimerkiksi kannessa näkyvä Child's Blanket. Neuleet ovat moderneja, perinteisestä islantilaisesta kaarrokepaidasta muistuttaa vain My Icelandic Sweater. (Linkit ovat Ravelryyn.)

I was shown Icelandic Knitting Using Rose Patterns (Rósaleppaprjón í nýju ljósi) (2008) by Hélenè Magnússon when I visited Iceland. I was then too cheap and did not buy the book which, of course, I regretted immediately when I got back home. Luckily a colleague of mine told me that he was travelling to Iceland and asked for tips. Then he asked if he could bring something back to me. I immediately told him that I want that book.
The book contains 26 knitting patterns all based on the traditional Icelandic rose patterns - patterns that were originally used as inserts or insoles of the shoes! In addition to that the books tells about the history of the patterns and knitting them. I saw some inserts in a museum and it seemed to be a waste to use such pretty and skillful knitting inside a shoe where none could see it. That is why it is is good that the patterns are now highlighted and shown to everyone though a terrible word is mentioned at the same time... Intarsia! Nevermind that, I say.
Some of the patterns in the book are very colourful and look like they're straight from the 80's, for example, the Eight-petal rose sweater in which the pattern has been enlarged to graphic shapes. Most of the patterns are beautiful, for example, the Child's Blanket also featured on the cover page. The patterns are modern and only My Icelandic Sweater reminds me of the traditional Icelandic yoke sweater. (The links are to Ravelry.)
