Kielo-kämmekkäät - Lily of the Valley fingerless mittens

Ullan piti ilmestyä eilen. Homma on kuitenkin kaikista yllättävistäkin auttavista käsistä huolimatta kesken ja saamme uusimman numeron julkaistua aikaisintaan keskiviikkona. Ullablog kertoo uusimmat kuulumiset - olethan huomannut, että Ullan etusivullakin on jo jonkin aikaa näkynyt Ullablogin kolme viimeisintä merkintää?

Ulla was supposed to come out yesterday. However, we've got so much to do that despite all helping hands, familiar and surprising ones, we're still in the middle of making it. It'll take at least until Wednesday to finish everything, if not more.

Nämä kämmekkäät ovat mukana. Jussi risti ne kissanpitelyhanskoiksi, koska Frank-poloinen näytti hieman mörtsiltä joutuessaan kuvaan. Kissanpitelyhanskat eivät kuitenkaan kuulostaneet kovin myyviltä, joten jouduin keksimään toisen nimen. Päädyin lopulta ankarasti kaksi minuuttia pohdiskeltuani Kieloon, koska mitä enemmän pitsineuletta tuijotin, sitä enemmän se muistutti kielon lehtiä ja kukkia. (Tiedän, se on vähän kaukaa haettu ja kielo / lily of the valley -nimellä on monenlaisia paljon kielomaisempia pitsimalleja, tunnetuin niistä ehkä Swallowtail Shawlin reunan kuvio.)

Suunnittelin myös Suurta Kateus- ja Kadehdintapostausta ihan sen takia, että Kaikki Muut^(tm) saavat hirmuisesti kaikkea hienoa aikaan ja minä saan viime hetkessä räpellettyä yhdet yksinkertaiset peruskämmekkäät... Taitaa kuitenkin jäädä haaveeksi sekin, koska en saa edes aikaiseksi sitä, että jaksaisin kadehtia muita parin tekstikappaleen verran. Voivoi.

The pattern for these fingerletts mitts will be published in Ulla. Jussi named these "cat holding mitts" because Frank did not look too happy when he had to pose for the pictures. That name did not sound good so I had to come up with another and ended up with Kielo, that is, lily of the valley as the lace pattern started to resemble the leaves and flowers the more I looked at it. (I know, it's a bit far-fetched and there are more lily of the valley-like lace patterns, the most known probably the edge of the Swallowtail Shawl.)

I also thought I could write a Great Green with Envy post because Everyone Else^(tm) seems to accomplish a lot of wonderful things and I can hardly come up with some simple, boring fingerless mitts. I just didn't manage to come up with that either, a few passages of text are also too much for me.

Knitted Lace of Estonia

Mikä olisikaan parempi tapa piristää nuutunutta neulojaa kuin ihana pitsineulekirja? Ehkä pitsihuivilanka tai jopa valmis pitsihuivi... Tai kirja. Book Depository armahti viimein kärsimätöntä raukkaa ja lähetti Nancy Bushin Knitted Lace of Estonian (Ravlink).

What would be a better way to cheer up a tired knitter than a lovely lace knitting book? Maybe lace weight yarn or even a lace scarf... Or the book. Book Depository finally had mercy on the impatient poor yours truly and sent the Knitted Lace of Estonia book by Nancy Bush (Ravlink).

Kirja on ihana! Ihana! Ihana! Hetkeksi unohdin sen, että minua harmittaa se, että en ole saanut hankittua Linda Elgasin Haapsalu Rätikud -kirjaa. Nancy Bush esittelee kirjassaan ihania Haapsalun huiveja, kertoo niiden historiasta, niissä käytetyistä tekniikoista ja ohjeiden lisäksi lopussa on vielä pieni pitsimallineulekirjasto. Muutamat huivit ovat tuttuja Haapsalun huivi -näyttelystä, muutamat ovat minulle uusia ja ne kaikki ovat ihania. Anteeksi vain kaikki, Ulla ei valmistu tänä viikonloppuna, ajattelin kieriskellä kirjan kanssa onnellisena muutaman päivän.

It's a lovely, lovely, lovely book! For a moment I forgot that I was sad because I have not been able to find Haapsalu rätikud by Linda Elgas anywhere. Nancy Bush introduces the lovely Haapsalu scarves in her book, tells about their history, the techniques used and in addition to the patterns, there's also a small pattern library. Some scarves I saw in the Haapsalu scarf exhibition, some of them are new to me and they're all lovely. I'm sorry, folks, Ulla won't be finished this weekend, I thought I'd just roll around with the book happily for a few days.

Epäergonomista - Unergonomical

Pieni assistenttini tekee tietokoneen käytöstä hieman epäkätevää (ja häiritsee Ullan koostamista), mutta minkäs kissalle voi?
My little assistant makes the use of computer slightly difficult (and disturbs the making of Ulla), but what can you do, a cat can't help it?

Lisäksi olen ollut hidas hämäläinen. Eilen bongasin neulojan bussista 195 aamulla yhdeksän aikaan, mutta valitettavan myöhään, olin itse jäämässä jo pois. En sitten voinut huomata sitä aiemmin! Jotain harmaata hän neuloi, olisi ollut hauska tietää, mitä. Tulin kotiin viiden jälkeen bussilla 510 ja vieressäni istuvalla naisella oli ihan selvästi oranssi-mustat Ailin lapaset enkä ehtinyt kysyä, olisiko hän tehnyt ne itse. (Kyllä, olen yksi niistä ooudoista tyypeistä, jotka saattavat joskus jopa puhua ventovieraille.) Jos tunnistat itsesi, hihkaise!

I've been slow lately. Yesterday morning there was a knitter in the same bus but I realised it too late, I saw it when I had to get off. I should have noticed it earlier so I could have asked what was the grey thing she knitted. I came home after five o'clock and the lady sitting next to me definitely had orange and black Aili's mittens. I was slow again and did not manage to ask if she had made those herself. (Yes, I'm one of the weird people who might even talk to strangers.)

Knitting on Top of the World

Marraskuu on ankeaa aikaa. Illat ovat pimeitä eikä täällä etelässä ole vielä lunta. Kun lähdin tänään töistä, parkkipaikan lamput eivät palaneet ja pihalla oli todella synkkää. Yritin uskotella itselleni, että toimistorakennusten ikkunoista paistava valo olisi kodikasta, mutta en onnistunut. Olo on muutenkin surullinen ja apea eikä pimeys auta ollenkaan. Yritin keksiä lohtushoppailtavaa, mutta rahani säästyivät, sillä aion pysyä edelleen langanostolakossa. En surffannut yhteenkään nettilankakauppaan (enkä edes keksinyt, mitä lankaa olisin voinut haluta, sillä sitähän riittää) enkä keksinyt mitään muutakaan ostettavaa.

November is a dreadful time. The nights are dark and here in the south we do not have any snow yet. When I left from work today, the lights on the parking lot were not on and the yard was really dark. I tried to convince myself that the light shining from the office building windows would be cosy but I did not succeed. I'm feeling blue and down anyway and the darkness is not helping. I tried to think of something nice to buy but I saved my money. I'm sticking to my yarn diet so I did not surf to any online yarn shops (and I could not think of any yarns I'd want because I have a lot of it) and I was not able to think of anything else either.

Aiemmin tilasin kirjoja. Odottelen vielä Nancy Bushin Knitted Lace of Estoniaa - Book Depository ei ainakaan vielä ole ilmoittanut peruuttaneensa tilausta -, mutta samaan aikaan tilaamani Nicky Epsteinin Knitting on Top of the World (Ravlink) saapui jo. Päänsisäinen jukeboxini ryhtyi ironiseksi ja alkoi soittaa heti The Carpentersin Top of the Worldia, vaikka olo on oikeastaan aivan päinvastainen.

En ole vielä ehtinyt tutustua kirjaan tarkemmin. Sen alaotsikko "The Global Guide to Traditions, Techniques and Design" lupaa paljon, mutta lupaukset ammutaan alas heti kirjan alkusivuilla ja todetaan, että kirja ei yritäkään olla kaikenkattava katsaus kansainväliseen neulontaan. En yllättynyt, yhteen kirjaan on kuitenkin mahdotonta tiivistää kaikkea ja mitä useammassa maassa vieraillaan, sitä pinnallisemmin niitä pystyy käsittelemään. Eri kansojen neuleet ovatkin olleet inspiraationa ja niistä kerrotaan lyhyesti jokaisen eri alueiden neuleita sisältävän osion alussa.

Selasin kirjan alun, joka käsitteli pohjoista: inspiraatiota neuleisiin ovat tarjonneet Ruotsi ja Bohus-neuleet, Tanska, Färsaaret, Islanti, Latvia, Viro, Venäjä ja Orenburg-huivit sekä geneerinen Skandanavia (kyllä, Skandanavia) ja vielä erikseen Norja. Suomi sivuutetaan kirjassa kokonaan ja "keskiyön auringon maaksi" kutsutaan Islantia. Pitäisikö nyt liittoutua liettualaisten kanssa ja mököttää? (Se oli vitsi. Arvostakaa sitä. Yrittäkää edes.)

Matka jatkuu Englannin ja Irlannin ja lähisaarien kautta Välimeren maihin ja Pohjois- ja Etelä-Amerikkaan. Neuleet ovat kauniita ja monipuolisia, palmikko-, kirjo- ja pitsineuleita. Toivottavasti ehdin pian tutustua kirjaan tarkemmin.

Earlier I ordered some books. I'm still waiting for Knitted Lace of Estonia by Nancy Bush - at least Book Depository has not yet cancelled it - but Knitting on Top of the World by Nicky Epstein (Ravlink) arrived already. The jukebox in my hear turned ironic and started playing Top of the World by The Carpenters though I'm having quite the opposite feelings.

I have not yet had the time to take a closer look at the book. It's subtitle" The Global Guide to Traditions, Techniques and Design" promises a lot, but the Introduction puts you down almost immediately and says that the book is not going to cover those issues extensively. That was no surprise, it would be impossible to squeeze all that into one book. The more countries you include, the less you can tell about each one. The different knittind styles and patterns have been an inspiration and they are introduced briefly in the beginning of each section.

I browsed the beginning of the book, Far North. The section derives inspiration from Sweden and Bohus knitting, Denmark, The Faroe Islands, Iceland, Latvia, Estonia, Russia and the Orenburg shawls as well as generic Scandanavia (yes, Scandanavia) and lastly Norway. Finland is not included and the title "Land of the Midnight Sun" is given to Iceland. Should we now team up with the Lithuanian people and go sulking somewhere? (That was a joke. Appreciate it. Come on, you could at least try.)

The journey continues via England and Ireland and the near-by islands to the Mediterranean countries and North and South Americas. The knitting patterns seem to be versatile and beautiful and include cables, colourwork and lace. I hope I'll have the time to study the book more thoroughly soon.

Ceels, yes, "langanostolakko" means "yarn diet". Literally translated it means "yarn shopping/buying strike" and "langanostolakossa" is "on yarn shopping strike". Now, that's a useful word to know in Finnish, isn't it? (It's a compound word: "lanka" - yarn, "osto" - shopping/buying and "lakko" - strike; the suffix "-ssa" then corresponds with the preposition "on" in this case.)

Viihdettä viikonlopuksi - Entertainment for the weekend

Kuten kuvasta näkyy, viikonloppu on mennyt varsin tiiviisti tietokoneen ääressä Ullan merkeissä. Kaikki liikenevät kädet ja tassut ovat käytössä ja tutut ja tuntemattomat on värvätty orjatöihin. Lisäksi olen ryhtynyt bloggaamaan interaktiivisesti eli sinä, arvoisa lukija, saat valita tämän merkinnän lopun:
- jos haluat tuskaa ja ahdistusta, siirry kohtaan 1.
- jos haluat varovaisen toiveikasta realismia, siirry kohtaan 2.

1. Oi ja voi, kiirettä pitää ja hoppua, Ullaan on tullut ennätysmäärä ohjeita ja koostamiseen ja oikolukemiseen menee aikaa. Oivoivoivoi. Pitäisiköhän siirtää julkaisupäivää? Kuinkahan tässä ennättää? Elma-messuillekaan en ehdi enkä ensi viikonloppuna Tampereelle eikä kukaan tuo kuitenkaan lahjuksiakaan. Voivoivoivoi.

2. Olen langanostolakossa, joten Elma-messujen ja Tampereen käsityömessujen välttäminen on hyvä asia. Budjettikaan ei Frankin eläinlääkärireissun jälkeen salli repsahduksia. Siksi onkin hyvä viettää ensi viikonloppu kummitytön synttäreillä ja tämä viikonloppu koostamassa Ullaa, josta tulee taas loistava. Kiitos uusien auttavien käsien, numero valmistuu varsin jouhevasti.

As you can see, the weekend has been spent mainly at the computer and all hands and paws have been full of work as Ulla should be published in two weeks. I've also moved to interactive blogging, so you, dear reader, can choose the ending you prefer:
- If you want pain and anxiety, move to ending 1.
- If you want cautiously hopeful realism, move to ending 2.

1. Oh and woe, I've been so busy with Ulla. There's a record number of patterns and it takes a whole lot of time to put the issue together and proofread and all. Oh dear. Should we postpone the publishing date? Will we make it on time? I did not even make it to the Elma fair to the yarn shop stands and I will not make it to the Tampere handicrafts fair next weekend and nobody's going to bring me souvenirs either, I an already guess that. Oh poor me.

2. I'm on a yarn diet so it's good to avoid the Elma and Tampere handicraft fairs and their temptations. My budget's tight after I took Frank to the vet and it would not allow careless shopping either. That's why it's good to spend the next weekend celebrating our goddaughter's birthday and this weekend making Ulla which will be great. Thanks to the new helping hands, this issue will be finished quite smoothly.

Haluan kiittää - I want to say thank you

Olemme kokoontuneet neuletapaamisien merkeissä Helsingissä tammikuusta 2004 alkaen. Päiväksi on vakiintunut kuun ensimmäinen torstai, mutta paikka on vaihtunut vuosien varrella muutaman kerran milloin mistäkin syystä (remontti, vaihtelunhalu tms). Parhaimmillaan paikalle voi saapua kolmisenkymmentäkin neulojaa.

Olemme nyt kokoontuneet muutaman kerran Aleksi 13 -tavaratalon 5. kerroksen Café Ursulassa. Jo ensimmäisellä kerralla henkilökunta sai tuntemaan olon tervetulleeksi (ymmärrän kyllä, että joukko ennakkoon varoittamatta saapuvia äänekkäitä neulojia voisi herättää myös vastakkaisia tunteita) ja tänään meitä kohtasi jättiyllätys: kahvilan henkilökunta oli järjestänyt meille ison pöydän ja toi vielä lisääkin pöytiä, kun ihmisiä kertyi paikalle enemmän! He olivat merkinneet edellisellä kerralla tapaamiset muistiin ja varautuivat nyt meihin aivan oma-aloitteisesti.

Uskomattoman loistavaa asiakaspalvelua! Lisäksi Café Ursulan salaatit ja muut ruoat ovat herkullisia ja tissuttelevaa neulojaa lämmittää erityisesti Nectar-sherry, joten en voi olla kuin ällistynyt ja tyytyväinen. Haluankin kiittää vuoropäällikkö Romania ja muuta kahvilan ystävällistä henkilökuntaa. Kiitos! Kiitos! Kiitos!

We have had knitting meetings in Helsinki from January 2004. We've changed the cafés a few times during the years for several reasons, sometimes the café was closed and sometimes we just wanted a change. The group gradually grew and now up to 30 or so noisy knitters cannot just drop in to the closest café.

Lately we have been meeting in Café Ursula on the 5th floor of the Aleksi 13 department store. It's a wonderful place with great salads, other food, cakes, drinks and wines and especially Nectar sherry. Today they had arranged a surprise for us: they had reserved a big table!

The friendly staff has made me feel welcome from the first time and tonight was amazing. We never asked for a table, they thought of it themselves! Last time they asked when we meet and today they were prepared for it. They brought more tables as more people arrived and we all were more or less astonished. I want to say a big thank you to the whole staff for the great service. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Se on valmis... Melkein. - It's ready... Almost.

Luxus Wind -villatakki on kissoista huolimatta valmis, tarkemmat speksit seuraavassa Ullassa.

Melkein-osuus tulee siitä, että napit ovat liian pienet ja ne täytynee vielä vaihtaa isompiin, että takki pysyy kiinni. Neule lerpsahti ensimmäisessä käsinpesussa ja kasvoi pituutta kymmenisen senttiä. Tietenkin napinlävet venähtivät siinä samalla. Neulepinta rentoutui niin, että edes Maxi parhaimmillaan ei ole yhtä löysä ja rento, vaikka kissaksi se onkin melko selkärangaton ja muistuttaa joskus lähinnä ameebaa. Siitä huolimatta otin takin koekäyttöön ja tänä aamuna se lämmittikin huomattavasti enemmän kuin eilinen bambusekoitevillatakki.

The Luxus Wind cardigan is ready despite of the cats and the pattern will be published in the next issue of Ulla.

'It's "almost" ready because of the buttons, they're too small and I'll most likely change them later. The cardigan (and the button holes) also stretched in the first (hand)wash, it gained some 10 cm of length and relaxed so that not even Maxi is as loose and relaxed though the cat does resemble an amoeba at its best. I did not mind, I took the cardigan into test use this morning and it was so much warmer than the bamboo blend cardigan I wore yesterday.

Luxus Wind - sitä kissa ostaisi - Luxus Wind, for your feline friends

Minin ja Maxin mielestä Novita Luxus Wind on aivan vastustamatonta lankaa. Lankakeriä on raahattu ja sotkettu spagetiksi. Neuletta on raahattu - ja mikä pahinta, neuletta pitää tampata ja möyhentää. Sen jälkeen sen päällä voi maata. Yritä tässä nyt ommella nappeja, kun jostain neuleen reunasta roikkuu aina kissa tai kaksi. (Tällä hetkellä kissat johtavat: Mini makaa neuleen päällä. Taistelu jatkukoon!)

Mini and Maxi find Novita Luxus Wind irresistible. The yarn has been dragged and made into yarn spaghetti. The cardigan has been dragged - and what's the worst, they have to kneed the knitting and stomp on it. After that they an lay down on it. Now, how am I supposed to sew any buttons when there's a cat or two hanging from some side of the cardigan? (At the moment the cats are winning: Mini sleeps on the cardigan. Let the battle continue!)
