About me and this site
Who am I? What am I doing here?
So you found my blog. Welcome! It's about knitting and more knitting, and
cats. Well, first things first, of course: my husband and I have three cats
and they have their own
web site (it's in English).
As you've probably realised by know, this web site in Finnish and I think it will remain that way. For you coming here for example through the Nordic KnitBlog webring, I'll try to include some English content in my blog so you won't get completely bored looking at the photos only. Oh, and there's a small Finnish-English glossary available as well.
I launched the first version of my knitting site in August 2002 when there weren't many Finnish knitting sites. Can you believe that not even the Finnish yarn manufacturer Novita had a web site then! I think I started the very first Finnish knitting blog in March 2003. There are more sites and blogs now but there sure is room for many many more still.
There are so many wonderful English knitting web sites made by native English speakers so I thought I would not even try to translate my thoughts into English. So, that was my motivation: there was a need for Finnish knitting sites and I tried to do something about it. (Talk about making yourself feel important... Ahem.)
So, I studied communications at the university and ended up as a technical writer (I do documentation in English) and as I apparently like engineers and especially telecom engineers, I married one last November. (And I never get tired of engineer jokes!) His name is Jussi and he's the sweetest guy around and he understands my compulsive urge to play with two sticks and a string. He did say the terrible words, "I have enough sweaters" one day, though... We live in Espoo (that's the city next to Helsinki) and as I mentioned, we have the three cats who like to get involved in everything we do.
What does Katajala mean, then?
It's our last name. "Kataja" means juniper and if you add the "la" to the end... Well, you cannot translate it word-for-word, but it could be for example the place where junipers grow.
