Book backlog

I've not gone to Turku yet, I'm still here! I've just been busy at work (the hectic week before my vacation starts is here) and on my spare time I've been running all kinds of errands. Yesterday was Jussi's birthday, so we went to see War of the Worlds. It was good. If you like classic sci-fi, I recommend the movie. It's much better than, for example, Independence Day which is another movie in which aliens just come and attack and destroy pretty much everything.

Anyway, I've been buying books but forgetting to blog about them. Yesterday I bought these on the way home from the movie theatre:

The black one is The Great Book of Insults (Calling names) and the blue-grey one underneath it is the Etymology Dictionary of Modern Finnish. (I've wanted an etymology dictionary for maybe 20 years now, I developed an interest for the history of words at a very young age and now I finally bought did something.) Hey, only a linguist could just pop into a book store and happen to buy two dictionaries!

But, let's get to knitting unless you want to learn some names you can call people... That is, the knitting books, namely Loop-d-Loop and Shawls and Scarves.

Loop-d-Loop by Teva Durham was published just recently. Minna got hers just before I got mine and I can agree with her: the ideas are fresh and different.

I liked the fairisle sweater that was knitted with short rows. I probably wouldn't knit that for myself, it was a bit too restless, but the idea was great and it'll probably look good on someone who can wear colourful sweaters well. My favourite was the Lace Leaf Pullover which, I've been told, has been published in a knitting magazine (Interweave Knits) before the book.

Shawls and Scarves (The Best of Knitter's Magazine) was published in 1999. If some photos look a bit 80's to you, it's probably because they are from the 80's.

The book has a collection on the best shawl and scarf patterns from the Knitter's magazine (you could tell that just by looking at the book's name, couldn't you?) as well some articles and knitting tips. The book has patterns for rectangular scarves, triangular scarves knitted from the top down and bottom up and there are even patterns for round scarves. The book has patterns for classic and traditional shawls and scarves and modern shawls and scarves. If you like knitting lace and find use for a big scarf or shawl, this is the book to buy.

Oh, the book also includes also a pattern for a hat. We shouldn't forget that, should we?
