Archeological excavations in Hanko
Archeological excavations have been ongoing in Hanko during this summer. A village existed in the current excavations site during the Iron Age and early Middle Ages The exact site of the early medieval Hanko has been located in the excavations done during this and last summer.
Viking age glass beads, Baltic ceramics and imported ceramics from Central Germany (dating from the 13th and 14th century) have been found in the excavations. The excavations have been done mainly by the students of University of Helsinki, but everyone interested has had a chance to participate as a volunteer. The excavations continue until the end of June.
